ANTI-DYSLIPIDAEMIA AND CARDIO-PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF NIGERIAN BITTER HONEY IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Background and Aim: Chronic hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, dyslipidemia usually predispose to cardiac aberrations. Certain honey samples have been reported worsen glycemic control or proven be cardiotoxic. The study sought elucidate the roles of Nigerian bitter in experimental diabetes. Experimental Procedures: Diabetes was induced adult female Wistar rats (90–110g) by single administration streptozotocin (65 mg/kg body weight, i.p.). Rats were randomly allocated into six groups (n= 8). Bitter (50 mg/kg) metformin (100 orally administered daily for 28 days. Animals sacrificed on day 29 blood obtained via puncture. Lipid profile lipid peroxidation analysis carried out using standard methods. Atherogenic, coronary, cardiovascular risk indexes calculated. Heart, pancreas, lung tissues harvested subjected histopathological assessment. Data analyzed one way ANOVA, statistical significant level set at p<0.05. Result Discussion: treatment diabetic animals significantly reduced triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, malondialdehyde, levels (p<0.05). Correspondingly, HDL glutathione higher preserved histoarchitectural integrity cardiomyocytes lungs tissue. Conclusion: is a highly remarkable repository naturally occurring bioactive compounds that can potentially modulate downstream biochemical pathways peroxidation. may therefore promising new source anti-diabetic cardio protective nutraceuticals.
